    Succesful Combined Concert

The Port Lincoln City Band welcomed 34 Victorian School students with teachers and admin staff last week, with a series of musical events held throughout the city.

Port Lincoln City Band was contacted by St Michaels Grammar School’s Musical Director, Chris McGillan, who expressed an interest in visiting Port Lincoln and performing with the City Band.

Chris McGillan said, “I found the City Band’s fantastic website and sent them an email. I received a reply from Valerie (secretary PLCB) who said the band was more than happy to get together with us. From there on we linked in with the High School and after many emails back and forth, we came to Port Lincoln”.

A number of activities were planned to exhibit St Michael’s musical abilities together with local musicians. Tuesday 30th of June, the night they arrived, was a combined rehearsal with the City Band at the High School hall. Wednesday, St Michaels rehearsed with the Port Lincoln High School band and then performed at Ravendale community complex in a Jazz performance. The Jazz performance included local jazz band Boston Bay Jazz, the Port Lincoln High School Jazz band and St Michaels Big Band and Super Band. The bands from PLHS and SMGS then combined for more great music.

On Thursday the St Michaels students provided a school concert at Pt. Lincoln Primary School and then rehearsed with the PLHS and members of the City Band in preparation for the Combined Concert held Thursday night. The concert was held at the High School hall and music was provided by the Port Lincoln City Band, St Michaels Grammar School bands and the Port Lincoln High School Band and attracted a large audience. The donation entry raised $285 for the Salvation Army Winter Appeal.

Throughout the concert the audience enjoyed a number of performances that included the St Michaels String Quartet, Big Band (directed by Natalie Calia), Super Band and Concert Band. St Michael’s Musical Director handed his baton to student director, Dante Kurth who led the concert band and vocalist Zara Gates in song.

The concert finale was a combination of all musicians, forming a “Megaband”. The Megaband was directed by Steve Campbell and Chris Mc Gillan, for an amazing performance with fantastic sound. With over 60 musicians performing at once the audience was engulfed with music that was thrilling and inspiring.

On Friday St Michaels performed a concert at St. Josephs School, bringing the local students a fun filled finale to their school term.   Friday night the St Michaels students gathered at the Lincoln Hotel Sarin’s Bar to perform a farewell concert. In addition to the String Quartet and Big and Super bands, individual performer, Hannah Campbell sang some songs that she had written.

The students and staff enjoyed their time in Port Lincoln and staff noted that Port Lincoln is “friendly and beautiful”. An open invitation was extended to the Port Lincoln City Band to visit St Michaels School in Victoria and combine again in concert.

The Port Lincoln City Band would like to thank the PL High School for participating and for the use of their hall. Thankyou, also, to the Salvation Army members who attended the concert and accepted donations at the door.

Of course the biggest thankyou must go to the St Michaels Grammar School students and staff for travelling such a long distance to perform in Pt Lincoln. All participants and audience members thoroughly enjoyed the music, and the school students were well behaved and wonderful representatives for their school.

The visit from SMGS has linked well into the City Band’s recently formed vision and sets the ball rolling for upcoming activities planned by the City Band.

The Port Lincoln City Band’s aim is to provide enjoyable experiences for its members and community through performances and development opportunities. By joining with St Michael’s school band and sharing them with the local schools they can say they are achieving their goal.

The Port Lincoln City Band aims to encourage students to continue their music beyond their schooling years and provides an outlet for any musician returning to music after a break. Activities, such as joining with visiting bands, are just one way of achieving that goal.

The PLCB also provides a Learners band that encourages young and old to join, and will offer use of band instruments to those who do not have their own or cannot afford to hire or buy their own.

PLCB Secretary, Valerie Staunton, says “by sharing our resources with the schools we hope to encourage music students to keep playing once they leave school. We want to create and maintain pathways for musicians to continue playing where ever they may go”

Anyone interested in joining the City Band can come to rehearsals on Monday nights at the rear of the Civic Hall, Washington Street entrance, upstairs in the Studio (above the Media Room). Rehearsals are held 7.30pm every Monday night for 2 hours and are run by Music Director Michael Hester.

Brass, woodwind, string and percussion instrumentalists are welcome to join. The band is a fun environment to learn and play in, for men and women, young and old.

a video of the City Band playing one of their concert pieces, “Coolsville,” can be seen and heard on You Tube.

    The band plans its future

Port Lincoln City Band sets sights on the future.

Vision for the Port Lincoln City Band has been formed.

A great turnout provided for a successful outcome at the Port Lincoln City Band Planning day on Saturday 23rd May. The Planning day was held to provide members, family and friends of the City Band to have an opportunity to have input into the future direction of the band. The goal of the day was to create a shared vision for the band, and set in place some planning to achieve that vision.  The day was facilitated by Sue Olsen, a non biased third party, to ensure smooth and efficient movement of the day.

Sue Olsen said, “The degree of involvement was excellent and the people felt comfortable in expressing their views. The process is useful for the committee to get a direction for the future.”

The Planning Day process allowed for all participants to have an input which proved to be highly valuable to setting the vision and goals. The 14 participants that included new and long standing band members, committee members, a community representative and family member helped establish a number of goals and strategies for the Band.

The day showed the committee members that they were on the right track according to the priorities identified, and also gave some solid direction to overcoming some obstacles.

The vision statement for the City Band that resulted from the planning day is “The Port Lincoln City Band promotes enjoyable experiences for its members and the community through a variety of musical performances and development opportunities.”

    Some of the goals for the band include;

    • Playing a variety of music styles to reach the interests of the members & community
    • Being active in the community through performances and other opportunities.
    • Providing enjoyable experiences/ fun for the members & community
    • Providing opportunities to improve skills (playing and other)
    • Updating uniforms
    • Relocating to an accessible venue

Some strategies have been identified, by those who attended and those who could not attend but submitted their suggestions in writing.

Vice President, Ann Staunton said "It's exciting to have a vision and some goals to work towards and we now feel 'ownership' of these goals.  I look forward to an even greater spirit of teamwork amongst the members."

The planning day is the first step to further planning and achievement of goals, and has provided members with the sense of ownership of the band, increasing their motivation and interest in keeping the band growing and improving.

Band rehearsals will continue to be held at the rear of the Civic Hall on Monday nights from 7.30pm to 9.30pm under the direction of Michael Hester.  The Learner’s Band continues to run on Monday nights from 6pm to 7pm under the direction of the Deputy, Ian Isaac and assisted by City Band members.  The Learner’s band currently has 5 members, Lucas on trumpet, John on Horn, Mary and Leonie on percussion, and Kristen on saxophone.  The Learner’s band is open to all ages and abilities, from never playing or reading music to some experience playing and reading. The Learner’s Band is a low cost, one hour lesson, which can help refresh long ago learned lessons or help develop new skills in music.  The City Band has some instruments available for use included in the price of $5 per week for Learner’s Band.

The City Band is open to all musicians that can play brass, woodwind, percussion, strings and keys. As the goals have been set to play a variety of music, all instrumentalists should enjoy playing with the City Band. The rehearsals are a fun and relaxed learning environment, led my Michael Hester. Michael has many years experience teaching music in the schools and privately and has helped improve the skill level of current musicians greatly since he first joined the band in October 2008.

The City Band has received funding from the City Council 08/09 budget to assist with projects and ongoing expenses. The Band has already requested an increase in the funding to assist with the upgrade of uniforms and other expenses that are necessary to facilitate growth, recruitment and promotion.

Upcoming events already planned for the City Band, that are inline with the new vision statement and goals set, include a combined workshops and Concert with visiting and local school bands. St Michaels Grammar School Band, from Victoria and the Port Lincoln High School Band will join with the City Band to perform a concert. This concert is planned to be held on Thursday the 2nd of June at the High School Hall with proceeds to go to charity.

October long weekend (3rd to 5th) aims to be another exciting time for the City Band and the community, with Dr Kevin Cameron again visiting Port Lincoln to conduct workshops with the City Band, local and school musicians with the assistance of Principle Players from the Unley Band.

Unley Band recently travelled to Paris, France to perform the music for the ANZAC day service and march to the Arch De Triomphe and came 2nd in the National Competitions in Sydney on their way to France. The Principle players will be able to assist sections of the band offering their expertise and high level of skill.

    Tunarama

The Band played well at the Tunarama parade and in the Bank SA tent on the saturday and Sunday afternoons.

A large audience listened to the band play under the Direction of Mike Hester in the Bank tent.
The Southern District Pipes and Drums led the audience to the tent on the Saturday after they finished their set.
On the Sunday the band led the Pipes and Drums into song.

All in all it was  a great weekend, great weather, great crouds, great music.

The band was decorated by the usual suspects, with additional helpers this year, Ashley and Leonie H.
The theme was to recruite new brass players. no response yet, but hopefully our brass hole can be filled!

    Christmas Carols at Woolworths

Well, we were scheduled for performing Christmas Carols to Wooloworths Shoppers on Thursday night, but anyone around town would know what a horrible day, weather wise, it was on Thursday, wind rain and thunderstorms heading in our direction.
Of course we all rocked up to play but at the last minute decided the venue did not permit us to play under the weather conditions.

However, a handful of band members, mainly the "Accidentals" with a couple of extras played christmas carols at the back door of Woolworths. A small crowd enjoyed the songs, including the City Band groupies that park their cars near our performances every year.  Also a group of ladies from around the state enjoyed our music.

A christmas raffle was on sale, and will be for the next 2 weeks, and thanks to Barb Carey we managed to sell a few tickets.

The City Band aims to be at the rear of Woolworths again this Thursday, hopefully the weather will be more suitable for outdoor performance.
    Look for us from 7pm.

Hoping to get some photos from these shows.,

    Port Lincoln Show

Sunday the 24th of August was a lovely day to be performing outdoors at the Port Lincoln Show.Sun
Almost last on the music schedule the Port Lincoln City Band performed some new arrangments never performed in public before.Note
Directed by Acting MD, Ian Isaac, the City Band performed well to the Show Goers.

Some of the songs performed include Fiesta, and I will Follow him - from the movie Sister Act, Swingin Safari, Conneticut Capers and some marches, a sunday hymn and other songs. For the first time the city band mixed up a song - Heart of My Heart - playing it through twice then swingin it and jazzing it up for the third time. An experiment that didnt work that well in rehearsal but came together perfectly for the show. With big thanks to Emma on drumkit and Ken for help in working the transition out.

The Boston Bay Jazz band had performed prior to the City Band as well as the St Joseph's School Bands and the High School Bands. One of the city Band members - Sonya - had been performing in 3 bands straight with no rest and no food, but she - the band's youngest member- played on as well as ever. Onya Sonya!!

    BANDEMONIUM A SUCCESS

    “Bandemonium” a success.

The June long weekend’s Bandemonium Festival has been deemed a success by participants and organisers. The Port Lincoln City Band joined with school students and members of the public hostel for workshops led by the highly acclaimed Dr Kevin Cameron. The festival culminated with a combined concert at the Nautilus Theatre showcasing the skills and technique learned in the workshops.

With Assistance of the Country Arts SA, the SA Band Association and Woolworths Port Lincoln, the Port Lincoln City Band was able to achieve a successful Bandemonium Festival, the first of its kind in Port Lincoln.

Dr Kevin Cameron, conductor of the SA Police Band and President of the SA Band Association, worked with music students from St Joseph’s School on Thursday the 5th of June, sharing his wealth of knowledge with the students. All had a great time and improved their music playing.

Dr Cameron then met with local School Music teachers to discuss music in the schools and in the community and to hopefully build some bridges, bringing the schools and the community band together for the benefit of the students and music in general.

Friday started at the Pt Lincoln High School, working with High School musicians and then with the Pt Lincoln Primary School musicians.  Again, the students lifted their music performances after working with Dr Cameron and all of the students enjoyed their time.

The PL City Band Deputy Music Director, Ian Isaac and President Gordon Hartley, joined Dr Cameron on his visits to the schools. Ian Isaac joined the students in music by playing his instrument, the Euphonium, and reaped some benefits from the workshops as well as joining in on the fun.

Friday night was a time to meet with the committee of the PLCB to discuss our future in Port Lincoln Music and Dr Cameron, as president of the SA Band Association, gave some great advice on how to run a happy and effective committee.

Dr Cameron has a Doctorate in music and philosophy, and a graduate diploma in education. His years of study and wealth of experience working with children and musicians of all ages, was demonstrated during the entire weekend. Every participant from 8 years old to79 years old, from beginner to advanced, learned something and enjoyed their time.

Saturday of the Bandemonium joined together school musicians (including one student from Poonindie School), the PLCB and other musicians. All participants gathered at the Lion’s Hostel, north Shields for a day they will always remember. Fun, learning, improvement in technique, new friendships, and lasting memories are some of the results from that one day. Sonia Radford, Founder of the Coast & Vines Music club, Woodend & McLaren Vale, also participated in the weekend’s events and was a great assistance to the percussion group especially. Nick Vladcoff, music teacher from the Pt Lincoln Primary School, was also a great support for the school students at the workshops.

Following the workshops gave time for dinner and a Quiz night that was a lot of fun and provided time for getting to know each other, sharing some food and laughing with each other at the hilarious Ruth Buxton, quiz master extraordinaire.

Sunday allowed for a sleep in before rehearsal for the concert at the Nautilus. A great rehearsal then turned into a wonderful concert to the public. The music performed was enjoyed tremendously by the audience, some were moved to tears! The concert was well received especially due to the school students participation and the amazing ability to play together so well after only one day together. A mouth-watering afternoon tea was supplied for the public post concert, providing the audience opportunity to mingle with Bandemonium participants and Dr Cameron.

Sunday night was the time to relax and enjoy each other’s company and some “wild music” back at the Lion’s Hostel for an “after party” with participants, sponsors and the large number of helpers for the weekend. Dr Kevin Cameron joined in on the jam session, playing the Tuba – his favourite instrument – and also had a lot of fun.

Monday gave time for private lessons with Dr Cameron, with also great results and hints and tips received.

“The Feedback received from participants has been all positive and every participant looks forward to participating in another Bandemonium in a year or two”, says Valerie Staunton, Event Organiser. “The PL City Band will defiantly host another festival again and we will aim to get more school students involved in addition to other Community Bands next time”

Having Dr Cameron available for this event has been an exceptional opportunity for all musicians on the Eyre Peninsula. All participants agree Dr Cameron was professional and fun and was invaluable to raising the quality of music in Port Lincoln Together with Dr Cameron, the festival would not have been a success without the numerous volunteers that helped out behind the scenes. “We would especially like to thank Nick Vladcoff and Sonia Radford, for their support with the school students during the festival”

“The entire event has brought the community together in unprecedented ways and has been a real success on so many levels” Miss Staunton said. “Everyone was happy with the event and had lots of fun, everyone left with a smile”.

The next step for the PLCB is to recruit a new Music Director. The band will then continue with working with other organisations to promote music on the Eyre Peninsula and further abroad.

    AUTUMN TONES PROMS CONCERT

Sunday, may the 4th, proved to be a fun day with the City Band joining with the Port Lincoln Singers to provide an interactive proms concert to the community . The  theatre was set up with the singers on the floor with the audience and the band on the stage. This made for an intimate occasion. The singers got the audience up and dancing, especially to the marches.
The Band showcased a variety of musics from Deep harmony, a traditional and moving hymn, to Rainbow Connection from the Muppets, The Great Escape, the movie theme, The Port Lincoln March written specifically for Port Lincoln many years ago, Accidentally in Love (Counting Crows) from Shrek, and Invercargil, one of the band's favourite marches. The band showed off their talented soloists in the jazz number "one O'clock Jump" with Don & Josh on trumpet, Wayne on alto sax, Tony B on Tenor Sax, Tony C on clarinet, Ken on Trombone & Paul on Bb Bass showing their skills.

Community singing was a great hit with the band providing the music, singers and audience members singing along with the words provided in their Programs.

The Port Lincoln singers also provided a great range of songs for the audience to enjoy accompanied by Piano and Flute.
After intermission the Boston BAy Jazz group (all members of the City Band) provided some jazzy numbers to pick up the beat and get everyone grooving.
The singers last song, 76 trombones, left me wanting to see Ken march across the stage blowing his Trombone to the song!

All in all it was a great concert, with the band lead by the nervous Ian Isaac.

Ian put a lot of effort into this event in planning, coordinating, selecting music with key band members input, arranging music and then leading the band and playing his bass trombone.

WEll done Ian, Well Done to the whole band!

    ANZAC DAY 2008

    SunDAWN SERVICE, ANZAC DAY
Everyone was up early for the Dawn service today. The service was attended by an unusually large crowd, which was fantastic to see.
Don, our trumpeter, played the LAST POST, brilliantly.
most band members joined the community for a GUNFIRE breakfast and rum laced coffee at the RSL post service. Coffee cup

    UmbrellaMARCH & 10.30 SERVICE
Umbrellas were called for just prior to the march and during the service as a "drizzle" of rain came.
The LAST POST was played by our own Don, again.
Denisha and Ross played the drums to march the corps back to the RSL after the service.
Hopefully next year we might have a real march (or meander)
Thanks to all band members who performed and helped out in other ways.
